My Experience Working with Pro Athletes

They all have the same trait...

My GF’s birthday is coming up. Could use a few extra bucks to put towards our dinner at Chili’s that I’m surprising her with. I know pretty epic spot. Hammer that “click funnels” ad above (and at the bottom) for me. Every click counts.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming…

Sports Icons Rock

For any sports fan growing up, your favorite athletes are your legit heroes during your childhood.

Tom Brady, David Ortiz and Paul Pierce were God-like figures to me growing up in Boston in the early 2000s.

There is no one else worthy of looking up to than your hometown pro sports heroes.

There is no one on the planet you’d rather be when you’re older.

Big Papi is such a beast

I was nine years old when the Pats went 16-0 (Giants fans STFU right now, honestly please just unsubscribe) and I thought every member of that team Hercules.

Maybe I’m just a psychopath (which I am) but that was my mindset towards pro athletes when I was growing up.

18 years later from that little kid who cried for a month straight every single day thanks to f****** Eli f****** Manning, and now working in the sports media industry directly with athletes, my outlook has changed on pro athletes.

I have met and created content with some of the largest names in sports and I have noticed one similarity…

Athletes are Just Humans

The best way to interact with pro athletes is to treat them like normal human beings. Simply because they are just that.

Besides Victor Wembanyama, that dude is a flat out Alien.

The only way to successfully navigate the world of sports media is to treat athletes like people.

Most importantly, you need to win their trust.

Trust translates to any personal relationship but especially with pro athletes.

Every big-time athlete believes anyone trying to interact with them is trying to take advantage of them in some way or the other. They have good reason to feel that way too. These guys have massive followings, incredible influence and a lot of power in our society.

That’s why they have managers/agents to vet different situations and people prior to allowing direct contact with the athlete.

There’s some scummy, weirdos out there looking to take advantage of athletes.

Build trust, and you’ll be able to navigate any group of people, but especially pro athletes.

Some of My Experiences

I used to host a podcast and interviewed a decent number of high-profile names. Throwing some names out there not to gloat, but to gain some credibility in this convo.

Full 40-minute+ interviews: Larry Fitzgerald, Dana White, TJ Oshie, Will Zalatoris, Austin Ekeler, Drew Bledsoe, Charlie McAvoy and many more.

Pat McAfee on a quick walk and talk was one of my favorites:

Mahomes and Kelce shortly after that was also a fun one:

These guys can sniff out in 10 seconds if that interview is going to be a complete waste of time or if they will enjoy it.

In my opinion and experience, a very relaxed yet confident energy resonates the best.

You also want to show your respect to them, but not bow down and overdo it.

I can’t bring my 12-year-old Hercules mindset to an interview, as they can’t get settled with that type of energy. It comes off as annoying to them.

Treat them like any old normal person, that’s how the magic happens.

How do I know my idol David Ortiz is a normal guy despite being the most clutch MLB player of all-time?

Because we slammed tequila shots together.

Same party, Lonie Paxton gave me one of his three Super Bowl rings to run around with. I told everyone I was a practice squad player for the Super Bowl 49 Pats win over the Seahawks.

That’s not Lonie on the left. Lonie is better looking.

The Super Bowl ring play worked 100% of the time.

Speaking of Super Bowls and my childhood idol, let’s talk about Tom Brady quick.

He is the co-founder over at Shadow Lion, the sports media company I work for.

And today, literally like 2 hours ago, we launched a YouTube channel and started a vlog series called “Last Week with Tom”.

Tap in, you’ll see even the Goat of Goats is still a human being!

More on the details of this series and how it came together next week.

This may seem like a super niche lesson specific to sports and working with pro athletes, but this plays in any aspect of life.

TRUST will conquer all, and create the best type of relationship you can possibly cultivate.

Thanks Fam

Reply to this email with your childhood athlete hero. I bet he wasn’t as cool as mine. Shoutout TB12.

Oh, yeah. I’m 100% serious about that Chili’s dinner. Smash the hyperlinks below. Maybe I’ll Venmo you like 15% of what I make on the ad (probably not though).

See you next week! LFG!
