The UConn-Duke Elite 8 matchup was the ultimate “where were you when that happened” game.
I mean, I don’t have words to describe it.
Here’s where I was when it happened…
Sitting in my apartment living room screaming nonsense at the top of my lungs while my girlfriend and her mother sat on my couch.
They both had never watched a March Madness game before this one.
And now they will remember this moment the rest of their lives (mainly because I was screaming at them).
When Braylon Mullins hit the shot for the win I dropped to my knees on the floor screaming in joy. Slapping the floor with two hands.
I’m not even a big Huskies guy, but also reeaaaallly not a Duke guy.
If for some reason you live under a rock and not sure what I am referencing, here’s the clip of the game-winner and the last 10 seconds of the game.
But what matters is the 39 minutes before this miracle shot happened…
UConn was down 19 points at halftime. Duke was 134-0 all time when leading by 15+ at halftime. ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FOUR AND ZERO.
A #1 seed in the tournament has never lost a game after leading by 15+ points in a tournament game.
The UConn Huskies had a 1.3% chance to win the game with 90 seconds left in the game.
UConn did not care.
Dan Hurley, my new celebrity crush, did not care.
His reaction to the shot and interaction with the ref will forever live in my brain.
They just never gave up.
They continued to fight back point by point, brick by brick.
It truly felt virtually impossible that UConn could ever win that ballgame. From the very first whistle Duke was the better team.
But not until the last whistle, because the Huskies kept fighting.
UConn led that game for a grand total of 0.4 seconds. That was enough.
Braylon Mullins (a FRESHMAN, by the way) was 0-for-4 from three the entire game. Then with 0.4 seconds left he buried a 35-footer to win the whole thing.
If you've never watched Jimmy Valvano's ESPY speech from 1993, stop reading this right now.
Dan Hurley and the UConn huskies must’ve played this speech at halftime.
Jimmy V was a legendary coach in his own right. The man was dying of cancer and stood at that podium and told the world three things:
Laugh every day
Think every day
Be moved to tears every day
Then he said the inspiring, "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." that will forever be remembered by sports fans and beyond.
Those words are still living. That's the thing about not giving up. It outlasts everything.
It doesn't have to be an illness. It doesn't have to be a buzzer beater in the Elite Eight against the number one seed in the country. It can be your Q1 numbers that aren't where you need them to be. It can be a relationship you're trying to fix. It can be a dream you've been sitting on because the timing never feels right.
You're at 1.3% and you think it's over. It's not over.
Mullins was 0-for-4. Duke was 134-0.
Don't give up. Don't EVER give up.
Have half the heart of a UConn Huskie and you'll be just fine.
Now for something totally different… I actually use Kalshi to bet (I guess they call it “trading”). I placed a future on Arizona winning the title and excited about the payout for when it happens.
I went 7/7 on my bets in the Elite 8.
Prediction markets are fun, I bet on AJ Brown to the Pats a month ago and liking my chances there.

Trade the Future. The Final Four Starts Saturday.
The Final Four is set: Arizona, Michigan, UConn, and Illinois all punched their tickets. But watching the games is only half the fun — what if you could put real money behind your predictions?
Kalshi is a federally regulated exchange where you buy and sell contracts based on the outcomes of real-world events. March Madness, elections, economic data, weather — if it's happening, there's probably a market for it.
I'm placing a trade on Arizona to cut down the nets. Their balance on both ends of the floor has been unmatched all tournament. But the beauty of Kalshi is you don't have to agree with me — you just have to have a take.
