The Long Shot

but is Water wet?

In partnership with

I touched some grass (basketball court) this past weekend and it felt good.

I mean, hey, after your podcast debuts on television, you need to come back down to earth a bit.

Here’s a video of me being overly excited to see The Quick Snap and my brethren airing on NBC Sports Boston…

So, yeah, the head got a little inflated, thought I was a big shot and decided I need to do a good deed.

Enter, basketball camp volunteer.

The camp was mainly just an excuse to prove to the world I still got it and hit a bunch of stepback 3s on some teenagers.

Nahhhh, it’s for the kids!!!!

Speaking of making 3-pointers, here’s how and why I got to camp.

One Big (LONG) Thing

One of my friends from high school, (shoutout The Governor’s Academy), decided to turn a childhood dream into a reality and play in the NBA.

Yeah, pretty crazy.

You may or may not know the name Duncan Robinson but he’s coming up on his 8th NBA season now playing for the Detroit Pistons after spending the first seven with the Miami Heat.

He isn’t just any bench-riding 12th man either. Duncan broke an NBA record being the fastest player in NBA history to make 1,000 three-pointers (343 games). He is a sharpshooter that has played a serious role on teams that have gone to the NBA Finals, twice.

He is the ULTIMATE long shot. He actually had a fantastic podcast called “The Long Shot”.

His underdog journey to the NBA deserves more than just a few sentences but I’ll give it a try.

Like I said, I met him at Govs and he was a senior when I was a freshman.

For a small high school, Duncan was a very, very good player, but no one thought he was going to the NBA (maybe, besides him).

I used to call him “Water” because, of course, he wet. “Slippery when wet” sign on this boy when he enters a basketball gym.

I was very serious about the game of basketball back then and tried to force my way under Duncan’s wing. I would rebound for him early mornings sometimes and join him in some shooting drills outside of practices.

We weren’t best friends in the world, but close enough to take this epic photo on his graduation day:

Crazy this was 15 years ago

We’ve always just kept in touch over the years.

“Water” hit a growth spurt even after graduation and Wikipedia has him at 6’7’’ but I think he’s a healthy 6’8’’ with b-ball shoes on.

That being said, he did a post-grad year at Phillips Exeter where he was great, again.

Although not great enough to get any serious D1 college looks.

So, he went off to Williams, a small D3 school where he was the “D3 Rookie of the Year”.

Next stop, transfer to Michigan, where he continued to just not miss from 3 and exploded onto the scene. Team went to the NCAA Championship and Duncan ended up signing undrafted with the Miami Heat.

Following a Summer League season of not missing a 3 with the Heat, doing what Drob does, he signed a two-way contract before eventually earning a full-time roster spot.

After a few seasons of being a very consistent, valuable player, he signed a very deserved contract. Very, very proud.

Couldn’t have happened to a better dude. Duncan is as nice and as caring as they come. He just happens to be one of the best basketball players on the planet.

Me stalking Dunc at a Celtics playoff game

Example A is him setting up a camp in his hometown that he doesn’t charge kids to attend.

Just next level good guy stuff.

And I was honored to be able to volunteer and lead the camp stretch and defense station.

These kids were ballers. The energy was infectious.

I mean who the hell wants to play defense at a summer camp on a Saturday.

THESE BALLERS DID.

It’s just another simple reminder to work hard at everything you do and have fricken fun with it.

It’ll make your journey that much better.

It’s the same way Duncan approached his road to the NBA. With grit and passion.

Carry that over into every facet of life, people. You will come out on top.

So, thank you to Duncan for having me out to the camp. I hope my stretching routine earned a spot back next year on the coaching roster.

And for everyone still reading, Duncan has an incredible foundation that he just launched honoring his late brother Eli. The foundation supports mental health, and I encourage anyone reading this to donate and support a great cause.
